More than you wanted to know about Delay Delay Delay

Delay: A Not-So-Late Introduction to One of Music’s Most Iconic Effects

This week on Inside the Recording Studio, Chris and Jody finally arrive at a long-awaited topic — delay — with just a touch of poetic irony, since the episode itself was… delayed.

But let’s be honest: when it comes to creating space, depth, and vibe in your recordings, delay is a powerful (and often misunderstood) tool. In this episode, Chris and Jody provide a broad-strokes overview of delay’s evolution — from early tape echo machines to modern digital models — and break down the most common types of delay, including slapback, ping-pong, stereo, analog, and digital.

Think of this one as your beginner’s guide or a refresher course, whetting your appetite for future deep dives into specific delay units, plugin picks, and creative routing ideas.

Whether you’re crafting ambient textures, doubling vocals, or just trying not to drown your mix in repeats, this episode gives you the starting knowledge to use delay more musically and with more intent.

Stick around for this week’s Friday Finds, the Gold Star word, and — as always — a little bit of classic Chris & Jody nonsense.

    Tuesday Tip: DI Bass Recording

In this Tuesday Tip Jody walks you thru recording Bass using a DI box and also going direct to your audio interface with a ¼” cable. Both methods of recording the bass get a similar sound and helps the mixing engineer when the levels are at a reasonable level for Re-Amping purposes.

Shoutout to: Radial Engineering for their Trim Two Stereo DI.

How to Record Bass with Direct Input: Tips for Clean Low End

Bass, Direct: How to Nail Your Low End With DI Recording

This week on Inside the Recording Studio, Chris and Jody dig into a foundation-shaking topic: recording bass using Direct Input (DI) techniques.

Whether you’re working with a classic electric bass or an acoustic fitted with pickups, DI is a go-to method for clean, tight low-end. But what exactly does “going direct” mean — and why should you care? Chris and Jody walk through the various ways to record DI bass, from basic interface inputs to high-end DI boxes and preamps.

You’ll hear when and why DI is the right move, how to get the best tone without re-amping, and why understanding impedance, gain staging, and your gear’s signal path can make or break your final mix. This episode is perfect for anyone looking to improve their low-end clarity, tighten up their tracking workflow, or finally figure out why their bass sounds like a soggy pillow.

And of course — there’s bound to be a little nonsense along the way.
